Corinda Students Put STEM Skills To The Test In Robotics And Pedal-Powered Racing

Corinda State High School students are putting engineering and coding skills to the test, recording strong results in robotics and human-powered vehicle racing.

The school’s robotics teams competed in RoboCup Junior Sumo, while its Human Powered Vehicle teams took on the Queensland Super Series Pedal Prix. Together, the activities give students opportunities to apply engineering, coding, and practical skills in competitive settings.

Robots Take On The Sumo Ring

Nine Corinda students represented the school at the Ormiston Sumo Regionals, competing across the Secondary, Intermediate, and Open divisions of RoboCup Junior Sumo.

In the competition, teams design and program autonomous robots to detect an opponent, hold their ground and push the opposing robot out of the arena.

Corinda’s Team DF Robot finished second in the Intermediate division, while Team Frodo claimed third in the Open division in its first year of competition.

Team Lilyana placed fourth in the Open division despite technical issues on the day. Team Toaster competed in the Secondary division, with the students already looking ahead to future events.

The results reflect the design and programming work involved before the robots enter the ring, giving students a practical setting in which to apply those technical skills.

Pedal Power Meets Engineering

The school’s Human Powered Vehicle teams have been combining engineering with pedal power on the track. During Race 7 of the Queensland Super Series Pedal Prix at Nerang, Corinda teams recorded three podium finishes. Blue Phoenix took first place in the Junior Boys School Built division, while Yellow Phoenix finished third in Junior Boys. Peregrine Falcon also secured third place in Senior Boys.

Pedal Prix combines endurance racing with an engineering challenge. Students work in teams to manage maintenance, strategy, and performance across the day.

The next race for the Corinda Racing Team is scheduled for Murarrie Recreation Grounds on September 5 and 6. The team is sponsored by Motorama Mitsubishi Moorooka.

STEM Skills Start In The Classroom

The competition results are part of a wider practical focus within Corinda State High School’s curriculum. In Years 7 to 9, students undertake semester-based subjects that introduce practical skills including joint construction, design, different material types and uses, and the safe use of hand tools and basic machinery. The school says STEM initiatives are integrated into the learning outcomes, with a strong emphasis on workshop safety and measuring skills.

In Year 10, students can choose subjects including Introduction to Engineering, Introduction to Furnishing, Introduction to Engineering Pathways, Introduction to Construction, and Introduction to Electrotechnology.

The school’s Resource and Innovation Centre also provides dedicated spaces for technology, creativity and innovation. Its robotics laboratory encourages students to create digital solutions to real-world challenges through robotics and coding, while its makerspace gives students access to 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines and soldering irons.

Together, the curriculum and facilities give students opportunities to apply practical skills through hands-on projects. On the Pedal Prix track, engineering, maintenance and strategy become part of the competition, while the robotics arena puts programming and autonomous operation into practice.

For Corinda students, engineering and STEM learning extend beyond the classroom into competitive environments. The track and competition arena give them another setting in which to put those skills into practice.
