Two Local Legends Join the Amazons Family Fresh Markets Team in Jindalee

Amazons Family Fresh Markets at DFO Jindalee, the biggest fruit-and-vegetable market in the western suburbs, is bringing out the big guns, with the recent addition of two powerhouse talents to their team: the “Banana King of the West” and one of the best butchers in Brisbane.

Mel Habchi

After many years trading at the Mt Ommaney Fruit Market, Mel Habchi and his staff have now joined the team at Amazons Family Fresh Markets.

As the door closed on his lease at the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre, a new door opened enabling Mel to continue sourcing and offering the freshest and best value fruit and veg in the Centenary area.

Mel has been called the “Banana King of the West.” Frankly, who can question his clout or buying prowess at the Brisbane fruit and veg markets when he’s able to offer fresh Cavendish bananas at $1.98 per kg when $4/kg is common at the major supermarkets (prices as of publishing date)?

Huge boxes of Honey Murcott mandarins for $14.90. Broccoli at $2.98/Kg. All these make the big chain supermarkets look extremely expensive.

Along with Mel, another local legend who has joined the team is Rodney Gaddes, a butcher with over 30 years’ experience.

“I have been a butcher for more than 31 years, I was born on the farm and this is something I really love doing,” Rodney said, adding that he is happy to be joining the Amazons Family Fresh Markets team.

DFO Jindalee Stage 2 Completed with 60 Retailers, New Cinema and Fresh Markets

Residents of the suburbs around Centenary have a new and convenient lifestyle precinct to regularly visit as the second stage of DFO Jindalee has been completed.

On Boxing Day, DFO Jindalee marked the completion with the opening of the six-theatre, state-of-the-art leisure site, Reading Cinemas. It’s the first cinema complex to open in the suburbs in 60 years.

The expansive movie house features a TITAN LUXE cinema with immersive Dolby Atmos surround sound, a reclining option on every seat in every auditorium facing a 23m screen, wider platforms throughout the cinemas for added customer comfort, and a bar and lounge area.

Reading Cinemas is the wonderful trimming complementing the cafes and restaurants at DFO Jindalee’s dining precinct and a suitable segue for shoppers at the retail sites, who might want a few hours of respite at the movies.

“DFO Jindalee was originally created to focus on outlet shopping, but this redevelopment has improved the centre to deliver premium leisure, sports and fashion brand outlets, plus an entertainment and dining precinct that will offer so much more to the customers who travel as far away as Toowoomba to regularly visit and shop,” Development spokesperson Michael Tree, Director of Asset Management for Trident Advisory Group, said.

“Stage 2 will complete the centre with the new Reading Cinemas complex; new lighting and skylights over a simplified floor plan and redirected shopping flow; the first fresh food retailer at the centre in Amazons Family Fresh Markets; plus a new dining precinct with fresh external green space/landscaping; to result in 60 specialty and dining retailers plus four major retailers (Nike, Goodlife, BCF and Reading Cinemas) and over 900 car parks.“

Score Great Deals at the New Amazons Family Fresh Markets in Jindalee

A new fruit and vegetable store has opened at the redeveloped DFO Jindalee site this summer and it’s named after a popular water park that used to be on the property. Amazons Family Fresh Markets is a 650 square metre supermarket offering heaps of fresh produce and pantry staples at reasonable prices.

Led by General Manager Nick Koutsis, the store officially started trading on 10 Dec 2020 with truckloads of fresh food and a selected range of grocery items. It’s open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days a week.

“I was down Coffee Club and saw people walking out with fruit and veg,” one local said a few days following the store’s opening day. “I didn’t know any fruit mart.”

In the 1980s, this site near the Amazons Place Park was known as the Amazing Amazon’s Waterpark, which was frequented by families and groups, especially during the summer.

In 2001, however, the theme park was turned into the Direct Factory Outlet (DFO) that didn’t quite live up to the expectations of the residents until the Wen family took over a few years ago.

Along with the Amazons Family Fresh Markets, DFO Jindalee has retailers like Adidas and Nike, as well as the new six-screen Reading Cinemas, which opened on Boxing Day.
